Formed in 1889 in the parlour of a sweet shop owned by Mr & Mrs Pickford. The Milkwood Tavern became an early club headquarters.

From 1991 to 1938, the club was based at Burbage Road Cycle Track. It was a member of the BAL from 1982 to 1989 and re-joined in 2004.

Sam Mussabini, the Olympic gold medal-winning coach from the 1920 Olympic Games, lived for several years at 84 Burbage Road. Harold Abrahams himself, a leading British athletics administrator and broadcaster, was first coached by Mussabini at the Herne Hill stadium when he was only twelve years old. Both are portrayed in the film Chariots of Fire.
