The club was originally known as Bedford and County Cycling and Athletic Club for men only, but by 1936, athletics was separate.

Their ladies section was formed around 1946 and amalgamated with the men’s club in 1948. Bedford & County had three spells in the BAL, from 1979 to 1981, 2000 to 2010, and 2013 onwards..
