The club was founded on the 27th September 1882 at the Farnworth Hotel in Aintree.

They then joined the BAL in 1970 and the UKWAL in 1982.

The first inter-club track and field match involving Liverpool Harriers took place in May 1883, at Kensington Fields, against Birchfield Harriers.

The return fixture was held at Lower Grounds, in the Aston, June 1883.

Conditions were wretched, but the attendance was still some 1,200.
