Originally known as Sheffield United Harriers, the club amalgamated with Sheffield City Athletic Club in 1975 to form Sheffield Athletic Club.

In 2000, the City of Sheffield Athletic Club name was adopted. 2015 saw a merger with Dearne Athletic Club completed to form City of Sheffield & Dearne AC.

Sheffield joined the joined the BAL in 1977 and the UKWAL in 2017.

Jessica Ennis-Hill was introduced by her parents to athletics at a Start:Track event at Don Valley Stadium during the 1996 school summer holidays. There she won her first athletics prize, a pair of trainers and met Toni Minichiello, who was to coach her to Olympic and world titles.
