The club commenced as Hampshire Athletic Club and changed its name to Southampton Amateur Athletic Club on 15th February 1932. 

They amalgamated with Eastleigh Amateur AC on 1st December 1970 to form Southampton & Eastleigh AC. Later names were Southampton City AC – and after amalgamation with Team Solent in November 2004 – Team Southampton.

A merger with Southampton RC on 1 April 2010 saw the present Southampton AC title adopted. The club joined the BAL in 1969.
