The club was formed in February 1983 by local school teacher Mike Smith.

Yate’s eight-lane track was completed in December 1988, with floodlights added in 1992. Yate formed a partnership with Westbury Harriers in 1997.

Matt Spicer became the club’s first GB international in 1980 and represented his country on three occasions in the hammer.
