NAL team to return at Loughborough International

Written by Alex Seftel

A team representing the National Athletics League will take part in this year’s Loughborough International Athletics Meeting.

The event, widely seen as the opener to the domestic outdoor track and field season, will take place at the Paula Radcliffe Stadium on Sunday 19th May.

As ever, the format of the match will see Loughborough University athletes compete against teams representing England, Wales, Scotland, and finally Great Britain and Northern Ireland Under-20s.

The NAL team will be chosen at a selection meeting held on Tuesday 7th May, with kit providers Fastrax sportswear returning as the team’s sponsor.

Last year, athletes wearing the Fastrax NAL vest sealed six victories, including through 400m hurdler Hayley McLean (Shaftesbury Barnet), pole vaulter Ruben Miranda (Thames Valley) and 800m runner Khai Mhlanga (Herts Phoenix).

Niamh Bridson-Hubbard (Blackheath & Bromley) made it a women’s middle-distance double by winning the 1500m, before Akin Coward (Shaftesbury Barnet) topped the high jump standings and Joe Dunderdale (Sheffield & Dearne) achieved maximum points in the javelin.

Angus Harrington wins the 800m at the 2022 Loughborough International.
Khahisa Mhlanga powered through for full points in the 800m last year.

The selection of athletes is linked to performances at NAL League fixtures during the 2023 season.

Selectors will look for athletes who satisfy the following criteria:

  • Competed in one fixture during the 2023 NAL season.
  • Either a first claim athlete or Higher Competition athlete from one of the NAL member clubs.
  • Confirmation of a seasonal PB through powerof10.
  • Highest-ranked available athlete based upon current form selected.

More detailed information on the selection policy, including a form to register interest in competing for the NAL can be found here.

Spectator information and opportunities for guest athletes is available on the Loughborough University website.

The NAL would like to thank Terry Lonergan and team from Fastrax for their support towards this year’s meeting.
